could someone post a general outline of the different settings that are available and how they affect picture quality

iso - aperture - f stop etc

i am getting a general knowledge as i read the posts but i would like to have a better understanding how everything works together to form the final shot

Welcome to the forum Maggie,

That is sort of a loaded question...

There are three main things that affect exposure. Shutter speed (the length of time), aperture (the size of the hole in the lens, represented by the F number) and the ISO (sensitivity of the film or digital sensor).

I suggest looking up 'Basic Exposure' or getting a good book like 'Understanding Exposure'.
