I have an older Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens on a Nikon D7100.
The lens is manual focus but it does meter on the D7100.

The aperture range is 1.4 to 16.

Shutter will only take a picture at aperture 16.

Anything larger and I get an "f e e" error message and shutter has no effect.
I've searched the manual but cannot figure what's going on.

Anyone have idea's how to fix ?

What shooting mode are you in? Have you configured the Non CPU lens data? When you say "older" how old? Is it Ai, Ai-s or Ai converted??

Normally that "f e e" message occurs with AF-D lenses when you don't have the aperture set to the smallest (f/16 or f/22 depending on the lens). This is probably why you are able to shoot at f/16 but not any other aperture.

^ This. Set the lens aperture ring to f/16 and use the D7100 to control the aperture. Newer "D" prime lenses have a small slide that will lock the aperture ring when you put it at the smallest aperture.

Do you have a picture of the lens you are using? I should have just asked for that initially lol

Hah ... never even thought of that snowbear ... thank you.

You too AKUK.

I have a D40 and use the 50mm f/1.8D and the 24mm f/2.8D on it all the time. For the much older lenses (AI-S) without electronic connections, this isn't an issue.

Is the lens autoindexing (AI)? Weird stuff can happen if you attach a lens that isn't and it can potentially damage your camera.

There is a setting that allows you to use the aperture ring:

f5 Aperture Setting -> Aperture Ring

should allow you to set the aperture using a ring instead of a command dial.

In the manual I kept looking for manual focus and release info.

Would have never found that f5 aperture setting ... thanks qleak.
