Hi all. I am considering buying the Nikon 80-200 IF ED, the supposedly fastest focussing one with the tripod collar stuck on. I know there are other options but wondering does anyone have experience with this particular lens on a d7100. Thanks

If I still had my d7100 I would try it on mine. I have the lens on a d610 though and it is quick to focus and really nice and sharp.

There are a couple of different versions of Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 IF ED lenses that had a tripod collar.
One is AF, the other is AF-S.
Nikon has made the AF version sine 1997 (280,000+ made).
They made the AF-S version from 1999 - 2004 (65,000 made)

The 2 even older 1-ring were both IF ED, but didn't have provision for a tripod collar.

Optically all versions of the 80-200 2.8 are virtually identical. I have the second generation 1-ring (push pull zoom) model and use it regularly on my D7000 with stunning results.

The only issue with this particular lens that I've found in my testing is that it tends to back focus quite a bit beyond 160mm when photographing subjects between minimum focusing distance to about 9 feet or so. Beyond that it's perfect. AF fine adjustment does nothing to correct it. Apparently due to the optical layout of these lenses this is a typical issue when using the 80-200 on digital bodies.

As long as I keep that limitation in mind my lens performs flawlessly. Here's a couple of shots I've done with my 80-200 and my D7000.
