I am looking to upgrade from my D40. Considering either a used D300 or used D7000. Pricewise, I like the D300. Is it as good of a camera? I shoot a wide range of stuff, but mostly portraits, street/city/landscape shots, and wildlife.

I believe you are also aware of snapsort but in case you are not here is how these 2 cameras are compared to eachother in there:
Nikon D300 vs D7000 - Our Analysis

Considering there are both APS-C sensored cameras, I'd also strongly suggest D7000. Its newer than D300 and I don't really see why one would prefer D300 over D7000 as nearly in every field D7000 is better than D300.

I guess D300 might be cheaper though?

D7000 would be my choice. It has a great sensor which should give you better higher iso shots, and lower iso shots with better dynamic range and detail. The d300 is sturdier and bit more professional in build quality with a beefier af module, but I'd still go d7000

I have and use both. I prefer the D300 75% of the time, but the D7000 does have its merits, such as somewhat better low light performance and video.

Easy, D7000
The D300 is all about the body but the sensor is very old.
The D7000 on the other hand has a very good sensor, much better inlow light and dynamic range.

I shot a D300 for 18 months and it was an incredible camera. For wildlife it is an easy choice because of speed and buffer. For everything else the D7000 wins. Best Buy has a crazy cheap deal right now for the D7000 and 18-140 lens. The D7200 is rumored to be coming soon so the prices of the D7000 and D7100 have been taking a nose dive...

Like coastalconn wrote, the only advantage the D300 has over the D7000 is the buffer and that is a big thing if you want to do a lot of continuous shooting. The buffer on my D7000 fills up pretty fast and can be very frustrating when you are shooting sports and or wildlife. As for everything else, it is all the camera I need.
