Nikon D40, D40x, or D50

Looking for my first DSLR. I know the D50 has been discontinued, but they are still available on the web. Would I be better off in the long run with the D50 over the D40? The D40x seems like a waste of money over the D40....about $200 bucks for more megapixels (that will never get used). The D80 is probably a little bit more than I want to spend....I'd rather put the extra money into another lens.

Basically, is there any reason NOT to buy the D50 and buy the D40 instead? Other than the smaller size?

Is the D40/40x going to limit lens selection a lot by requiring the lens to do the AF?
