Now if you only had the 55-135 you'd be suggesting getting the 18-55 ;)

Covering the range is important. Covering the range with a single lens is a recipe for bad quality images. Remember that when that 18-200mm lens takes your fancy.

It would help if we knew what area of photography you're likely to involve yourself in most, though I'm guessing looking at your zebra photo, that perhaps wildlife is an interest.

What I'd suggest though is to spend a little time with the kit lens and get used to the camera first. Use the time to find out what sorts of shots you can get with it and crucially, what you'd like to be able to shoot successfully but can't. Use that as your guide to where you need to expand your gear.

Also something to keep in mind is that your D40X does not have an internal drive motor for autofocus, meaning those Sigma and Tamron lenses you're seeing with the same focal ranges for half the price will be manual focus only on your body.

If you want to use autofocus, and especially if you are just getting into interchangeable lens cameras, make sure you get Nikkor lenses with "AF-S" in the title.

That said, a good compliment to your 18-55mm would be the 55-200mm found here:
    [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-55-200mm-4-5-6G-AF-S-Nikkor/dp/B000O161X0/ref=sr_1_1/105-3056214-2524420?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1186665178&sr=1-1[/ame]
And for a Nikkor lens with AF-S and VR, $250 is a great price.
