    Hello All

I have a Nikon D5000, with a Tamron 70-300 Zoom lense, and its ok. Its not very sharp at 300 MM and thats what I really want. A lense that is gonna give me better results at higher magnification.

I'm not a complete photography nut and so I'm not particularly clued up on everything. I've heard that I might be able to get a extender and that will be give me some extra zoom. Can anyone clear this up for me.

I'm also have got a Canon Rebel XS Kit, and so I could also look at a lense for that. I mean your the experts so what do you guys think. This is for Sports photography and Wildlife photography, so it needs to be pretty fast so a large aperture.

Well if you require more information please do ask! And I thank you in advanced for the help.

If budget permits Nikon 300mmF2.8, if not Sigma 120-300F2.8 or Sigma 300F2.8 or cheaper option Sigma 100-300F4
Putting an extender on you Tamron will make it worse than it is already

Prime lenses are usually sharper, so I would go with the Nikon 300 mm 2.8. Although I don't do a lot of sports photos, I found the 300 mm a tad short, If the budget permits, go to the 400 mm.

Also consider the Nikon 300mm f/4. Should be OK with a 1.4x extender provided there's plenty of available light.

If you can afford $5300 for the nikon 300mm f/2.8, go for it. The Nikon 400 mm f/2.8 prime is a cool $9000.

Welcome to the Sports and Wildlife photography world, where fast glass with long reach is the holy grail. All it takes is some money........

The Sigma 300 mm f/2.8 prime or 120-300mm zoom is cheap at $3000, but like wescobts mentioned, a bit short on reach for field sports and wildlife.

I don't like to go below 500mm for those.

Ye I completely understand what you mean....

Would you guys recommend second hand lenses or are they a no go?

Used glass is one way to mitigate your expenses. Good glass doesn't depreciate much though.

When buying used just remember it's buyer beware, but I 've often gotten good glass on the used market from both private sellers and retail outlets.

B&H Photo Video and Adorama both have used euipment departments.

KEH.com specialises in used gear and I keep an eye on Amazon.com, too.
