I am still learning when it comes down to using correct lens for correct purpose.

I have a 18-55VR and 55-200VR. Which lens is better for the following scenarions?

1. Landscape
2. Close-ups of flowers / insects
3. Portraits of kids / people (NOT action shots of kids, just portraits).

Appreciate any info.

Hi
As far as I know to shoot landscapes you will ned at least 18mm lens (10-20mm ideal) so your 18-55mm vr will do the job. I have D40 with 18-55mm dx and landscapes and close ups are OK with this lens.
For portraits use 55-200mm at about 150mm - this will give nice blured background.
I hope it helped.
Have fun with your camera
Regards
Tom

Landscape -- 18-55 VR (not set to 18, keep it at 28 or higher to reduce distortion).

2. Close-ups -- 18-55 VR (the 55-200 is a great lens for the price, but it doesn't focus NEARLY as close up as the 18-55 does)

3. Depends. Prolly the 18-55 set at 55, or the 55-70 set at 55, whichever gives you the better image quality. Both should be excellent, they are both good sharp lenses. Neither one is really a "portrait" lens but they are both good lenses.
