I have a Canon A-1(P, Av, Tv, and M modes & manual focus) that I really like but have a Nikon D40. I want to get a Nikon body that is very similar (as close as I can) to the A-1 since I love it so much. but I also want to be able to share lenses and have pretty much two uses (film and digital) for each lens I get. so which Nikons should I be looking for

The D40 does not have the greatest compatibility with earlier Nikon lens
mounts though some lenses can be used with limited capability.

Here is a Nikon lens/body compatibility chart that shows which Nikon lens
mount versions work with which bodies, etc.

As for which Nikon body is closest to the Canon A-1 (feature-wise), it would
probably be the the FA. But, I think a later AF model would be more practical
for sharing lenses with a D40.

I thought that the D40 could be used with the widest variety of Nikon lenses of their DSLR. It may not AF or meter but it will work. I don't mind shooting fully manual (w/o a meter) on my D40. I really see no need for AF with what I am doing so I won't spend my money on it

'Can be used' is not the same as compatibility.
The chart in that link I gave you gives the details of compatibility.

If you don't mind losing auto features when using older lenses on your D40, that's fine.
    Go for it.
