I just purchased my first DSLR. I bought the canon rebel XS kit. I was told by a friend of mine that the 18mm-55mm lens that it came with was crap. For a stater lens I was looking at the Tamron Autofocus 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 and the 70-300mm. Like I said I am new to the photography game but I would like to know if these are good lenses for a starter.

    Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you shoot with your 18-55mm for a while and judge it's quality for yourself. It's not really that bad of a lens but it's got a terrible reputation.

Either of those lenses you mention, are not going to give you anything better than the kit lens.

I actually owned the 28-80 lens that you speak of and it was a terrible lens, the 18-55 is way better by comparison.
