The dark areas of the image don't need to be any lighter. If they were it would look funny.

What I don't get is why its titled "Old Path" there is no visible bath at all in the photo.

Water can't be a path? Maybe the shooter is in a boat.

It's a small structure on a secluded part of a large Japanese garden. Not as visited as other parts. But it's usually calm and quiet there.

I actually darkened the initial HDR, to make it look more as it really does to the eye.
