Opinion required for buying New Lens for Sony NEX

Hello there. I own a Sony NEX camera and want to buy a 16-55mm lens. Since NEX lens are costly in India, I thought to go for Nikon or Cannon lens instead. I'm thinking to buy an adapter and then buy a Nikon/canon (16-55 or equivalent) lens for my NEX. It'll not only save me money but I'll also be able to use a wide variety of lenses if I buy a Nikon/canon adapter.
What I want to ask is whether it is the right thing to do or not? I'm new to photography and it's been only 2 months since I bought my 1st camera. What I'm majorly concerned is that with an adapter, does all the features of the camera can be used or are there any limitations to it?

Why didn't you get a Canon camera in the first place ?

I'd look at third party lens made for the E mount instead of stacking adapters.
