i find it really hard to transfer what i see in my head to the camera .

i see all these great places and i stop to try it out and they come out very bland and flat

well it is usually like that when shooting in a bad weather conditions. and what's more, you were shooting in the evening, when there's a poor light. so do not expect good results when you shoot on auto mode ... try using a tripod and longer exposure. what's more try to set a white balance on "cloudy" or something like this, because your snow looks blue.

you should work more on the composition (see photo number 1).
The last one is nice - nice angle and quite good composition (try cropping 2-3cm form the right )

Good idea mentos. I think a square crop could work well here, too.

Do you mind if I post an edit?

Don't use the camera meter to get it right. With snow open it up a stop or two to get that white snow, really depends on what else is in the frame. I think the colors would have that pop to contrast nicely with the white of snow.

Here is something I have learned when you get to a fabulous scene that you want to capture. STOP. Look at the scene, move to the right then to the left and really think what you want to capture. The longer and thus few shots I take come out better then when I just start shooting fast.

please post the edit , i have no problems with that .

the more i browse the forum the more i see how croping effects the overall outcome of the photo.

thanks for the pointers . and if i remeber right i had it set to cloudy and everything was still very blue . but it was getting dark fast so im sure that had somthign to do with it .
