Petition to Canon!

There's Linux in all its variations which works but completely lacks commercial software support. You can run the operating system and while you can do word processing email and browse the internet, you're out of luck if you want to play games, use CAD software or photo editing. It is however a very good server OS.

I don't really know what you mean by commercial software support - as in tech support, or having lots of software? Red Hat Linux is about 50 dollars IIRC and you get support. There's also a strong linux community.

And:

http://www.linuxcad.com/

http://www.gimp.org/

The only one I can vouch for is the GIMP, I didn't even look at the other sites.

Yes... there are a ton of programs out there for Linux but like Linux coding tools there are several dozen that will do similar, simple tasks in a variety of ways but none that will do it all. It's like Windows - you build a movie file using Windows Movie Maker then have to write it using Sonic. On Mac I can build the movie file and write it with one piece of software.

You left my favourite windows off. Where's 2000. Second most stable system to date I think. My 2003 server has crashed once, and that was due to the heatsink falling off my video card. But it's not easily accessible. Fortunately our faculty provides copies to all students through some MSDN academic agreement.

ME crashed less than 98? Is that in the right order?, also remember the early classic with 95? The system would crash every 49.5 days to the second! Classic programming there!

The only problem with macs are the majority of it's users. If most of them weren't such stuckup snobs their price may even be cheaper as Job's mob notices that people are price sensitive and don't have a religious tie to the Apple logo. Remember the Macintosh II was in all the schools because it was cheaper than the IBM clones.

Also I find with Linux even without commercial support things are still pesky. So you want to play some music, install xmms. Dammit MP3s don't play. Oh I need to install libmpeg, but there's also the fraunhofer decoder, but that one says it doesn't comply with the GPL licence. What's the GPL licence and why would I care I.... stuff it I'll reboot and play this song in windows. (actually this specific situation has long been resolved but it's one example of what happened a few years ago and still happens today with plenty of other things. Back then it was mp3s, now it's HD content.)

The good thing is that as Apples are expensive, the varmints that write viruses cannot afford them. Also the people that pay as much as is needed to buy a Mac, have spent so much they don't want to blow it by wrecking it by writing a virus!

You're not serious, are you?

Darn! Ya made me look :)

No idea what the sx100 looks like, but if it's anything like Olympus 3040 - you are better off not attaching anything extra to lens.

Can we change petition to "Where's the 5DmkII?"

The anti-social geeks that write viruses are statistically reclusive teenagers that don't have a job and aren't doing well in highschool. Yes I am serious - they cannot afford to buy a Mac.

Maybe they have rich parents?

Canon won't add filters to this camera. Why? Because it would cause people who want to use filters not to buy more profitable SLR cameras where they can sell a whole world of accessories like lenses, filters, triggers, battery grips, flashes, etc, etc, etc.

so why do most other models in the PowerShot range have the option of putting a filter on then?

Remember the G7 and the lack of RAW well guess what? People complained to Canon and what do you know it was back for the G9

Whenever I attend a product launch or a Rep comes round we always get asked what customers are asking for, they ask for a reason. So don't be surprised if the next version has to option to add filters and conversion lenses.

wow... talk about getting way off topic.. hehehe lol.

My observation is that the majority of the viruses are written by college students.... at my university most originated from the computer science lab which we struggled to lock down and prevent.

You forget that the Canon G-series is unique in that it is a marketed towards the very high-end P&S. It is a very small corner market (backup for pros, advanced users with a need for compacts) and difficult to sell.. (expensive compared to P&S, hard to explain to a buyer the advantages, and priced closely to lower end DSLRs) speaking from experience being on the other side of the counter. The core reason why the G7 was such a flop is that the market for these high -end P&S demanded RAW..... this is not the case for the rest of the "traditional" P&S market which JPEG is fine.

Simply put... the P&S market is geared towards the regular consumer. Filters, RAW, etc... are a hard sell in that market as they bring little value to the eyes of the regular consumer. This is really what Garbz has been saying.... the market for the SX100 doesn't see value in those features. I'd say the majority of the buyers either gravitate towards the regular P&S or towards a entry level DSLR.

The SX100 is not the same market as the G-series.
