Has anyone here tried a Phoenix lens? I have been looking
for an affordable 28mm lens, but the closest I've found is a
24mm f/2.8 for US$ 75. I was expecting to pay about twice
that for an entry-level wide angle prime. Is it too good to
be true?

Yes, I'm sure it's too good to be true. I've never heard of Phoenix. Cheap wide angle lenses are usually wrought with problems. Even great ones are subject to all kinds of distortions.

I had not heard of Phoenix either, although I know that Phenix (China) make a K-mount body that Vivitar sells as the 3800N so perhaps there's a connection there. I suppose I'll start saving again and keep an eye out for a used 28mm that's in reasonable condition. Thanks for your comment.

Phoenix lenses are made in S. Korea by Samyang (spelling?). Not a very good quality lens, if you ask me.

That's two thumbs down then. I'm convinced.

Thinking about it, a tripod should be higher up my list of priorities anyway.

Yep, that'd be much better!
