Photo overlay?

Hey all im new here but starting with a big question. Im trying to do something but I have no idea how to ask this or what its even called so I will describe it and hope someone knows what im trying to do.
A guy I used to work with years ago used to be big into photography. he would set his camera on a tripod and take multiple pictures of us sitting and standing around the room. He wouldn then edit them and put them all together making it look like we were doing this in multiple places at one time with the one picture. Does anyone know what this is called and what to use to do it?
Any info or help appreciated!

It's called compositing. Any pixel-level photo editing software that allows multiple layers and masking, such as Photoshop, will work for that sort of editing. Keep in mind that learning to use such programs to do such things generally takes some learning and practice.
