Continuous lights would certainly work for a subject like your wheels...but you would be well advised to use a tripod and remote (or the self timer).
If you did decide to go with strobes, they can be triggered in two ways. The first is to plug in the cord into your camera, if it has a 'PC' port. If you don't have a PC port...but have a hot-shoe...then you can get a 'hot-shoe to PC' adaptor. You can even use wireless transmitters to fire the strobes...but you still need to plug into the camera somehow.
The other way to trigger the strobes is with your camera's flash. Most strobes will act as 'slaves' and will fire automatically when another flash is fired. If you camera uses a 'pre-flash' this may cause problems though.
