I'm going to NYC on Friday and I was wondering if I could get any tips as to how to take pictures in crappy weather.

It's supposed to rain/be cloudy all day, so if you have any tips for me to still get some good pictures that would be great. Thanks!

Faster film. Although Fri is suposed to be a sunny day.

OH... While you're down here, go to B&H (close early Fri, and closed Sat) and get a ton of film n suppies.

Enjoy the sights and take plenty of pics.

i went to nyc on an overcast day, and was pleasantly surprised that some of the pictures gained from the weather. you can use the weather as a part of your images. good luck

Sounds fun! It's been a few years since I went, and it was July... I don't have any advice -- just have fun!!! Using the weather as part of the pic could be really cool!

We have a member on here, MrMatthieu - he was in NYC only a couple of months ago and decided NOT to do the "tourist thing", i.e. head from sight to sight and snap away (like I did when I was there last year in April, mind you :roll: ), but to find himself a spot, settle in that spot, and pre-visualise a scene he then waited for to happen. And his photos impressed me to no end! You might want to search for him and his pics via the Member's List -> Member's Search -> Profile -> Find all threads started by... and get inspired!?!?

Other than that, all I can suggest is to go where all the tourists go.
Like I was on the top of ESB which a big snow storm approaching! Not the weather you wish for when you go up there (for all the money you have to pay for admission!), but ... very interesting!! And - ha! - NO QUEUES ("lines" for the Americans)! No waiting at all. (But not vision either after the first 10 minutes).

I found two of the pics taken off ESB into the approaching snow storm for you:

the pic had thses settings, although i think it was on shutter priority or something. if you zoom in there is noise because i had a high iso due to the lack of light and need for speed (i was on a rocking boat). and looking back i realize i could have opened my aperature up some. oh well hindsight is 20/20

setting
shutter speed= 1/1000
aperature= f8
iso= 800
focal length= 70mm

this is part of my east coast set on my flickr ( http://flickr.com/photos/lotheringtons/sets/72157594574453059/ )

this is another picture that i took right after it stopped sprinkling but before the sun came out. i think i overdid the photoshopping

I'd say that Times Square is fun to shoot on a rainy day (oddly), as are the rivers. Other than that, as a last resort there's also a lot of interesting stuff to shoot indoors - particularly at the Met, Natural History, or Grand Central Terminal. (Or you could run up to the Cloisters - there are some great pictures to be had up there, and you can go to that and the Met on one admission.)

On a slightly related note, a few weeks ago we had a fantastic lightning storm here in NYC, and I took a few shots from my apartment. Not the best pictures - but they were fun. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7734937@N07/1002326501/in/set-72157601204420451/ or http://www.flickr.com/photos/7734937@N07/1002968577/in/set-72157601204420451/ or http://www.flickr.com/photos/7734937@N07/1002967549/in/set-72157601204420451/)
