Pictures of my cat

I took some pictures of my cat today and ended up with two shots that I was satisfied with.
I would sincerly appreciate some advice on how to edit these pics. The first one i used the burn tool in PS CS3 on the whole background to make it darker. It was to bright. The second picture is straight from the cam.

the second is great, it looks like a decapitated head is just layin there, because of the lighting.

Two good photos. Would have liked the subject to pop-out a little more. The first one did a pretty good job of that but the second just doesn't seem to have enough focus.

So maybe I should try to blur the background somemore on the second one?

Great photos, I really like the DOF in number 1, and the style in #2.
