I agree, a smile would be nice, but with a child of this age, take what you can get! My other niggle is the busy and distracting background. Even though you've made good use of selective focus there's still a lot of detail back there to grab the eye.

I actually like the background, it lends to the story of where the picture was taken. It is actually her Great Grandmothers house and piano (my wife corrected me here).

One more from the opposite angle... that is her great grandma in the background.

I really like the first one. The expression tells me she's somewhat angry that you interrupted.

I like the second one better - she's more active, I like seeing Grandma in the background, and I like the back-lighting better.
