Please help with my Canon Rebel XS

I've recently stepped into the wonderful world of DSLR. Lord help me! I take good pictures, but I want more. I have always had a love of photography, but I need help getting this concept down. I've read the manual and watched the video, but I want to take some pictures with "depth". In other words, not just your typical P&S pics.

I guess the first thing I'd like to learn is how to make the background kind of blurry.

BUT! I'm willing to take ANY pointers and/or lessons you lovely folks are willing to give!

Also different lenses will help you achieve this effect, look up the Lensbaby. I've done a similar effect with my 75mm-300mm zoom fully extended.

Remember your picture is only as good as your lens (or how clean it is). :thumbup:

Heh. You inspired me. I went and bought a lens cleaner.

Also, I talked to the chick at Best Buy and had her show me a bunch of different settings to play with.
