Portrait - your advice please

Hi guys .. I haven't been around for a long time, and it's good to be reading you again.
I am having some problems with the pic below, I haven't been able to blend the background correctly and I wonder if you have some advice because I don't know what else to do (my knowledge of photoshop is quite limited, btw)..
Maybe it's just me, but I keep seeing it as a cheap old movie with a fake background ..

The only thing I would do with this is to darken it somewhat. Maybe if you isolate the BG and darken it even furthr than the subject it would lessen it's impact.
Other than that I think it's a very cool portrait...well composed. :)

I should probably have like a web version with the background a bit darker.
But for my 50 bucks printer, if I darken the background much more, it doesn't look very good ...
