I have a D40 and an 18-200 Nikon. When I take a picture, just after the shutter closes, the image as seen through the viewfinder, shifts, (to the right, usually). The shift is accompanied by a short sound similar to focusing however, there's no re-focusing. Images appear fine. I've noticed it for sometime now and I ask myself, "has this always been?" Unfortunately, I have not been able to set much time aside to spend photographing so enough time may pass between uses that I can't remember. Is it possibly the VR mech. releasing it's control?

Sounds like the VR to me Definitely nothing to worry about.
