Problems with flash or camera?

I have a Canon 50D and recently when I'm using my Speedlite flash a lot of my photos are coming out with just a strip along the bottom showing and the rest is dark. Help?

It appears to be the camera as I've tried just using the on board flash and the same issue.

Looks like your flash is firing out of sync with the shutter in your camera. The black section could be because the shutter is partially covering the sensor when your flash fired.
