Pulling away from being a beginner

Thanks. That's a lot of really good advice.

I agree that finding good subjects is more important than equipment.

That being said, I'm considering getting the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4. It seems to be of decent quality and fast.

Hi Timo,

This is John from the DuckDuck Collective. Thanks for your link.

Just wanted to comment quickly and offer that for the post you linked, we were using a Canon 5D Mark II , a Canon 24mm 1.4L lens, and a Canon 50mm 1.2L lens. (Well, to be thorough, there are also two film photos on the page, which were shot with a Yashica dual lens reflex. Those are the square photos.)

You could absolutely get photos like that with the Rebel. The only difference is that the Rebel's sensor has a 1.6 crop factor so, to get a 50mm "look", you'd need to buy a ~35mm lens. And to get a 24mm "look", you'd need a 15mm lens. I'd recommend the 35mm 1.4L, if you only could pick one. There is also an EF-S lens for the Rebel that is 10-22mm, so you could replicate the look of the 24mm with that.

We have video podcasts where we talk about some of our techniques. There will be many more in the future. You can check those out at http://duckduck.tv

Hope this helps, friend. Good luck! :)

John
