question about crops and leveling

Just an opinion poll...do you feel like empty background should always be cropped from portrait/wedding photography?

And also, I feel like some photographs off-level feel more authentic or less posed maybe than having all of a series leveled...I don't really know all the golden rules of photography and just got some feedback...a lot of it is useful, but some of it seems like is too much by the book...turns into production instead of artistic expression....

What does everyone think?

(On the other hand maybe portrait/wedding photography is just really more about production than artistic expression...but would be nice to have a good blend.)
