Question about editing backgrounds?

I started editing this pic... I may be going about it completely wrong... My idea was to completely black out the background ... I am stuck... How do I finish blacking out what you can see through the glass??? And then how do I fix the "imperfections" of the glass?

This is just one of my "experimental" shots... I know it probably isn't worthy of C&C, I'm just trying to learn GIMP and am a little bit stuck

If someone wants to just tell me how to do it, I can figure it out...

Or if you want to do it to make sure we are on the same page and then tell me what you did step by step, that would work as well
