I can't speak for the Toronto show specifically but I've found those types of shows to be quite unrestrictive in terms of photography.

All the car shows I've been to have been totally open to photos. Why wouldn't they? people passing around photos of the latest cars is about the best "free" advertising they can get.

If you know certain people, the best time is to get in as a press member. Get to shoot all the photos you want without the crowd getting in the way.

I brought the Canon to the DC new car show (http://www.claffie.com/photos/070125/index.html) but saw others toting around their D50s and whatnot. The only time I was not allowed to take a pic was when I tried shooting a shot from atop a staircase overlooking the whole lower floor.
