It really depends on where you are and the laws governing the communities you are working in.
Some of the best money you can spend is to go and have a sit-down with a lawyer to go over all of this and to discuss contracts as well.
I do a lot of freelance work. You dont really need to register a business name all you really need is to get your name out there and known. Go to PR companies and get on their mailing list for events etc. Even if not on a guest list or Press list, see what premiers are on etc and get shots, then you at least have samples to show. I did this before signing a contract with a top paparazzi agency.
