Why are some of the photos from my Canon 50D coming out like this?

data corruption.

At some point during the life of the image an error occured while the file was being read or written. It can happen when the camera writes to the card after taking the image, when the card is read for transfer to your computer, when the transfered data is written to your computer, or at any other read ro write cycle.

The most common reasons for the corruption involve either a faulty card reader or faulty card. If you are transferring directly from the camera, then the camera is acting as the card reader during the transfer.

I would recommend that you start by using a different card. If that solves the problem then you've found the culprit. If not, next change the card reader. If that fails to resolve the issue I would suspect the card reader in the camera to be at fault meaning the camera needs service.

If you are using only one card and using your camera as a card reader, thus never removing the card from the camera, it could be that the contact between the camera and the card is faulty. In this case, I would suggest that you start by removing and re-inserting the card in the camera 10-20 times to "scrub" the contacts.
