i'm taking a few bridal portraits for a friend of mine on saturday... we were planning on taking a few pictures outside of a local church, nice arches... she just had a member of that church say it was not allowed for "non members"...are there any rules, etiquette...concerning photographing outside of churches? i thought that as long as there's not a "no trespassing" sign posted that it was fine...help pls!!!

If it's private property, they set the rules. Although, I'd ask a church official, rather than relying on 2nd hand information. And since it's outside, I would hope they would be helpful. Of course, you could just go there and shoot...and only leave if & when they ask you to leave.

    Liability.

I don't think this will be confrontational. You're simply asking if it's OK.

Besides.... it's only polite to ask. Imagine coming home and finding a photographer with a client making portraits in your front yard... or in your garden.

    Good luck.

Quite a big difference there, between a church and my garden. I don't know a lot of people who live in churches (inb4 Alice's Restaurant).

And from the sound of it, OP's clients ARE members of the church? (Doing their wedding at a church they don't go to?) If so I'd be inclined to tell Mr. Snitty McSnit to STFU.

I do not see confrontation here ... they might actually be very happy that you ask and not just do it.

thanks, i'll just call and ask, i wasn't thinking confrontational to ask, just if they came out and asked us to leave...and i to think there's a HUGE difference in a personal yard/garden and a church's brick arches...

oops, should have added, but i don't want to be unprofessional in any case... :) i just didn't know if it was common to ask first...the instructor of a class i took here said they are all pretty used to it and it wasn't a big deal...

and THERE'S the problem. It's all private property, deserving of the same respect.

But still.... I doubt there's a problem. Like Alex_B said... most folks are happy/flattered to help when asked. Many get testy when not asked.

    Good luck!

    Who is OP?

And, it sounds to me like it's client... not clients. What wedding? Aren't we discussing a bridal portrait?
