Quick question about checking film loading...

I just bought a Nikon n8008 film camera and loaded the film, but the counter keeps giving me "E", indicating that the film isn't advancing properly.

I have a little red LED on my keychain. Is it safe to use to check my film in a dark room (no windows) so that I don't ruin it?

No, any light will fog film. You can only check by feel in total darkness.

Just out of curiosity, why do I always see a special sort of red light in dark rooms in the movies?

That's only for printing paper, which is no where near as light sensitive as film, and probably only b&w paper at that.
