How do I know if a filter will fit on my lens?

There should be a size on the lens and also on the filter....like 77mm or in your case probably 72mm.

All lenses have this info on the front of them, you just buy a filter that has the same mm. I'm not familiar with Canon but from this list it looks like you will need a 72mm filter.
