    I think they might be robber flies - don't hold me to that, but the heads look a bit like them.

    As for the shot a tricky one - really you wanted to be on the other side of have some flash to boost the lighting - shooting into the shadow is always going to be tricky. In this case you've gone for the insects and got overexposed problems on the sunlit sides - it detracts from the image, but if it were me (and without flash or a reflector) then chances are I would have done the same - to show the insects in detail.

    I agree with overread that they are a variety of robber fly.
