Can anyone work on cloning/brushing the shadows out behind the heads? I've been trying but just can't get it to work out right.

Don't give up so easy. Keep at it, that's how you learn.

Checkout some YouTube vids on cloning.

for this picture, why? what would removing the shadows accomplish?

Another easy way is dup the image into another layer so you have two of the same image. I would mask out the two people and then blow them up just a tad so they cover up the shadows. Then flatten it and boom your done.

I assume you have a larger image to work with. In any case, try this approach:

1. Select a piece of the background about like this:

2. Copy that to a new layer (Ctrl+j), move it over to cover the shadow behind the man. Stretch the copied section a bit vertically.

3. Put a black mask on that layer and paint with a small, white brush to reveal the new background and cover the shadow. Use the same technique for the shadow behind the woman.
