What do you get when you cross golden hour with Oklahoma red dirt? Really cool sunrises (and sunsets).

For me, when there is that much sun reflecting off the water, then it stands to reason there should be more detail in the darkest darks. I opened those shadows just a hair, got rid of the bright billboard, and dropped the ceiling a bit. Just another opinion.

The original is a lot nicer image to look at.
 
It depends on what you are wanting to do with this photo. If you are wanting the silhouette or wanting details in the shadows. (How you meter it will make a difference in this too.)

I was using a handheld light meter and was metering for the overall scene. Expanding the dynamic range wasn't what I was trying to do in this one.

I agree that it is a matter of opinion and the original image was my opinion of how this image needed to me.
