I've been looking lately to pickup a flash for the D7000 but my knowledge surrounding the area is not great, I've read a fair few things but the basics are mainly to be used on camera indoors / Portraits and Off Camera, well, because there's some cool stuff you can do...

Any advice on Sb600 vs SB700?

My first flash that I bought was a SB-600
Then I bought a SB-700
then two SB-800s

I'm not a flash expert so take my opinion with a grain of salt ..
The sb-600 is a very nice flash, and worked flawlessly when it was my only flash.
When I added a SB-700 and got into Off Camera Flash I started noticing some oddities.

First of all .. the menu takes some getting used too as it's an old design.
The SB-700 has it beat in the menu category.

Then I noticed that the flashes were off-balance in the light output. So the sb600 always had to be at a higher equivalent setting than the sb700.
If the sb700 was at 1/2 the sb600 had to be one or two steps higher.

A few other differences.
The sb700 comes with a built in pull-out bounce card. Which actually comes in handy.
The sb700s head turns all the way around, versus 270 degrees for the sb600.

But the sb600 is cheaper (than the sb700) and a very nice and durable flash.
For a first flash I don't see any problems.

I only sold mine because it helped pay for the 2 sb800s I got from a member here.
