Scanning Photos?

I think my scanner is either scanning to much detail or is having problems with the photo texture. Any suggestions how how I can scan a good image from a photo?

Here is my problem

(I didn't take the photo these are family photos I want in digital format.)

Dunno, but my guess would be it's set at too low a dpi/ppi.

I tried several different settings this one is here was scanned at 300dpi.
