I have a friend who wants me to cut together a little hunting show for him. I dont have a fancy HD camera so I'm forced to use my D300s. In doing this, I need to get a decent shotgun mic so I can get good audio. I have little to no knowledge of whats good and what to stay away from. I dont want to spend thousands of dollars on this, maybe $150 to 160 max. I was hoping to get a hotshoe mounted mic if possible.

Do a lavalier, and use a small shotgun or the onboard audio to sync it. You'll get cleaner vocals without as much ambient noise polluting the recording.

How are you going to do follow focus and keep the D300s good and steady (tripod, video head)?

Rode VideoMic Directional Video Condenser Microphone w/Mount

Thanks for the mic! I have no idea what I'm going to do for that. This thing is nearly impossible to focus on the screen and the AF is terrible. I have a good tripod. It might just be a case of trial and error, unless you have any tips.
The point is, your D300s needs a lot more than just a condenser mike to shoot decent quality video.

Is there a recommended starting point as far as the follow focuses go?

Rode videomic pro. If pro is too expensive, just get the regular videomic.
