I am looking to upgrade from the kit Canon EF-S 18-55m lens on my Canon Rebel XTi to a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.6 DC Macro, which costs roughly $430 CAD around here. Is this sigma a good lens? Is it the best "general" lens I can buy for around that price?

My Sigma is a 17-70mm/ 2.8-4.5 so I don't know if it is the same but the price is a little higher than what I paid for it, around $375 US, last year. It must be pretty popular since it gets asked about here quite often. I will say what I usually say, that it is a good lens for the money. You can take some nice pictures and it is well built. I have dropped mine a couple of times and gave it a few other hard knocks.

Two things I like, the macro feature is good (1:2) and it does well with low light.
