I'm not too keen on the tilt-**** gimmick either. I have a tilt-shift lens, but I'm usually using it to place the depth of field in the plane of my subject and the gimmicky thing I tend to see are people going the other way. But I have seen a *few* tilt-shift portraits that I thought were very interesting.

HDR, Tilt-shift, tone mapping, 3D, BW, SOOC, abstract, minimalism etc are all facets of modern photography that if done well produce interesting results but "done well" is in the eye of the beholder. I have seen photographs that bear little resemblance to the original and I liked the end result.
