I just wanted to share something that happened to me yesterday.

I received a call from a concierge from an upscale resort about 200 miles away. They had a guest that needed a photographer in my town and wanted to know if I was available. One concierge was going to call a resort in my town for a list of photographers, but the other concierge has seen some of my posts on photography forums, went to my website, found my phone number and called me directly. How cool is that.

I accepted the assignment and will be doing the shoot this weekend.

    So, keep on posting!

    Have Fun,
    Jeff

    Good stuff.

I'm a member of a local wedding photographer's referral group (blog/facebook etc). I haven't booked any wedding though it yet, but one of the members had a friend who wanted landscape photos. Turned into an $800 sale for me. :D

That is cool Jeff. You obviously have good work out there and are making an impression. Hope this turns into a really nice payday for you.

I got a couple of senior sessions this year because of a client posting her pictures on facebook. A couple of her friends liked the shots and I got some work. Probably wouldn't have happened without facebook.

Should I charge? I know some of you guys get upset if people give stuff away for free but on the other hand im just starting and if they thought it was good enough to ask then why not? help me out here guys. Sorry that I asked in your thread bro.

    No problem.

If people are asking you to shoot something, then you should get paid. Charge what you feel comfortable with, taking into account your skill, how complicated the shoot will be, how much time you'll spend Photoshoping and the income of your community. If your client is from out of town, like mine is, then you may be able to increase your rate.

I charge $100 an hour, plus expenses. My time includes transportation, any work before the shoot and post production. I live in northern Arizona, so my rate is a little low. If I were in a large metropolitan area, like southern California, I would be charging $150 to $200 an hour.

Thanks for all the great comments everyone.

    Have Fun,
    Jeff

I had the shoot today, and everything went perfectly. I couldn't of had a better shoot. The timing was perfect, the weather cooperated, and everyone was as happy as can be. The future groom even gave me a $20 tip. Have Fun, Jeff
