I was looking at the Nikkor 16-80mm f2.8-4g...but that's pretty pricey.
It would be for general photography, jammed on a D7100.

Is the 16-85mm f3.5-5.6g worth a darn or do you have any other suggestions altogether?

On my D7100, I have the 18-55 kit lens and carry a 70-300 as well for general photography. This seems to cover 95% of my needs. I also have a 50 mm f1.4D for some low light work, a Tamron 90mm macro for closeups, and a set of extension tubes to round out the set.

I find the 18-55 is used most often followed by the 70-300. The others see use only in special conditions.

Apparently you didn't get the 18-140 kit lens with that body.

If the 16-80 2.8-4 is too pricey, then do you have a budget in mind?

Buy a used Nikon 35-70 f/2.8 AF-D lens! They are down to around $300 or less on ebay! Very good lenses and hard to beat for that price. No, not as fast focusing as AF-S lens would be. But your getting very good and fast f/2.8 lens for cheap! It is a heavy lens compared to new plastic ones. If you need to go wider. Then later get a 20-35 f/2.8 AF-D or maybe if pricing allows 17-35 AF S! With a D7100 you can take advantage of these very good older screwdriver AF lenses.

I still have mine along with the new plastic fantastics.

To go into more detail than my last post:
    I own Nikkor 35mm f1.8g
    Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-5.6g VR

I don't find myself using the telephoto lens much because of its size and weight; quite difficult to lug around in my cargo shorts pocket and I have no desire to carry a bag just for 1 lens.

I want a lens that will cover a short end where my prime doesn't. And a longer end without having to reach THAT far.
I honestly think that that answers my own question regarding the 16-85mm that I mentioned in the OP. I can get it used from someone for $400 CAD.
I question whether I should just sell my 70-300mm nikkor...it seems like a darn nice piece of glass but I just haven't been fond of its darn size.

For what your going to get for the 70-300 used, I would hang on to it.

I just sold a sigma 17-50mm OS lens as it's not required since I bought a d610. It's a really good lens on Nikon dx cameras

    Hmm.

I can't believe I'm going to say this but it sounds like you should go mirrorless, something like the Sony A6xxx series since you are putting your DSLR in your cargo shorts pocket and the 70-300 VR is too heavy and too big. First time I've heard anyone saying the 70-300 VR is too big and heavy lol.

    Anyways to your question.

Sounds like you are looking for a general purpose wide to mid zoom. For your budget, I'd recommend the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 OS Contemporary. You can find them used on eBay for a great price. Steal actually. It's a good lens too.

Even the Nikon 18-140 VR isn't all that bad.

I use the 18-105mm 3.5-5.6 for my general use/walk around lens. I used to use the 18-55mm and I kept finding places where 55 did not have enough reach and I felt I needed to switch to my 70-300. 90% of the time I leave the 70-300 at home unless I know ahead of time I will be shooting where I will need the length(zoo, race track, ...).

If I have a shot that needs a lower aperture I have the 35mm 1.8.

Probably never happen. I accept that.
But thinking out loud. I have a plan to get a Canon DSLR.
    I have a Sigma 28-105 4-5.6 that stays on my EOS650 most
of the time. I plan to get adapter(s) to use my FD glass.
    I have 1.4 and 1.8 50mm for low light.
But again it's all thinking out loud.
    The 28-105 is pretty compact.

Update: Not sure what happened to the 1.4 50mm. But there is a Sigma 2.8 24mm on the other AE-1 body. It focuses down to less than a foot.
