Starting a small business in CAnada

Okay so this question is going out the Canadians who have started thier own business. I'm in Ottawa, and next year my sister and I are looking at starting a little photography business on the side.

Now I'm not really sure where to start looking for information or forms that I need to fill out, if I need to do any at all. Do I need to register the business? File for a GST number?

Any help to get us started would be great!

Check with your municipal government. I believe that small business fall under that jurisdiction...I may be wrong though. You also need to consider what type of company you want to form. There are benefits to incorporating your company but it means a bigger registration fee and more complicated accounting.

I believe that you don't have to file for a GST number unless you make more than $20,000.
