Stereo vs mono on imovie with zoom h1

Hi all,

I am looking at getting a Zoom H1 with a lavalier mic.
The idea being syncing the audio with the video from my DSLR using iMovie.

I have watched a lot of reviews regarding stereo vs mono and I am concerned that if I bought the wrong mic when I put the audio together in iMovie I will only get audio out of one speaker.

Am I misunderstanding something here?
Do I need to buy a stereo mic or adapter?

This is what I'm thinking of getting;

-Zoom H1
-Audio Technica ATR50 ATR series Omnidirectional condenser Lavalier mic.

Not familiar with those items but usually mono input devices put the sound on both sides and stereo input devices split to the two sides.

Apparently not, if you record in mono using the h1 it puts the audio into the left speaker only then using I movie you have to duplicate the file as a stereo format.
I wondered if anyone had experience with this?
