Suggestions for getting started

My husband and I are trying to get started in the wedding photography business. What's the best way to get started when you don't have any actual "weddings" to show in your portfolio yet? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do two for free. Hook up with your local church. Get in there and see what comes up. Use friends, family etc.

I don't know if you've shot any weddings yet, but if you haven't, I'd suggest both shooting at weddings you've been invited to (but don't get in the way of the hired photographer), and see if you can hire out as assitants (either together or separately). Weddings are (hopefully) one-time events, so I wouldn't jump into the business if you haven't had experience in the actual process. Assisting can be a big boon. But if you have a lot of experience shooting elsewhere, that probably won't be an issue.
