Suggestions on lens for D610

Any other respectable sources that you recommend? I should be purchasing everything in the next 2-3 weeks, depending on when my tax refund gets here.

I'm not from the US, but it seems like Adorama has it in stock.

And I was also looking at the NikonAF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Lens just for S&Gs. Is that lens worth the extra $500 over the 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 G FX AF-S ED IF NIKKOR

I can't speak of this other lens as I've never seen it, nor even tried it myself. When I bought my 18-35mm f3.5/4.5, it was pretty much all the money I had left after buying all my other gear, so I settled on that one. That being said, it's a lot of lens for the money. Read some more on both lenses, ask feedback here, and if you have the extra money, why not, but if you are on a budget, and want to save that 500$ for something else, trust me, you won't be deceived.

Also, how do you feel a wide angle lens like this would fare with street photography, such as long expo, light trails, ect.

As far as long exposure, did you look at Ruifo's album? He's got some amazing night sky shoots that just makes me so freakin' jealous, but I'll get there myself too one day...

I did. His stuff is pretty damn amazing. I definitely want to get into that. Im gonna get the 18-35. $750 really isnt bad at all for a solid lens like that, and I wont be blowing ALL my money on a body and 1 lens. I do want pick up some filters and a backpack and have some money if I want to get a 50mm as well.

Also, long exposures are a great use for the newer Nikkor AF-S 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED. In fact, I am doing one right now, at a very clear starlit night where I am right now. Have fun!

Awesome! I cant wait!

I never used the 16-35mm f/4G ED VR, but I'm sure it's a good and solid lens, aimed for those needing VR, like video shooters, and if you want/need to go wider, toward 16mm. I went with the 18-35 once it's sharper wide open, and faster too (f/3.5 vs. f/4). The 18-35 is better for night shots because of that (using tripod in long exposures). Most comparison reviews out there point to:

Image quality, final results:
1st = 14-24mm f/2.8G ED
2nd = 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED
3rd = 16-35mm f/4G ED VR

Lens built quality (construction):
1st = 14-24mm f/2.8G ED
2nd = 16-35mm f/4G ED VR
3rd = 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED

Lens light weight:
1st = 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED
2nd = 16-35mm f/4G ED VR
3rd = 14-24mm f/2.8G ED

Lens filter use:
1st = 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED + 16-35mm f/4G ED VR
2nd = 14-24mm f/2.8G ED

Perfect. Thanks man I really appreciate it.

i use Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED, a think is good

One last question to Rufio: Being that the 18-35mm does not have VR, what's the slowest shutter speed you're able to use being handheld? I come across certain times when I have no room to mount a tripod and need to be handheld. It would be nice to get down a 1/2 sec being handheld and I'm sure VR would greatly help that.

Ideally, match the shutter speed with the focal length: 18mm with 1/18 sec; 35mm with 1/35 sec; 50mm with 1/50 sec; 200mm with 1/200 sec; etc...

I'm quite happy with my 24-85 VR on my D610..sure it isn't a constant 2.8 like pro lenses and it may have some distortion..but it is lightweight and has really good VR, great for general purpose photography. My copy is pretty dang sharp.

Recently, I just picked up a new 35 f/2D..and boy I love that lens! I probably use that a bit more than the 24-85. But I'm thinking about getting the 18-35 because 24mm just isn't wide enough for me. I've used the Tokina 12-24 f/4 on my D7000 for years..so I'm very comfortable with that 18-35 range.

Picking up the D610 and 18-35 tomorrow. I might also pick up a 50mm as well. Is the 50mm f/1.8G the way to go for 50mm?

I also have a dumb question. When lenses are listed with an aperture range of f/1.8 to 16, is that the range of aperture that the lens will go to, even if the camera allows for much smaller?, or is that just the ideal range?

The 50 1.8G is excellent piece of glass..better than the 1.4 IMO. You'll love the bokeh it produces.

Yes, when lenses are listed with a range like you said f/1.8 to f/16, that is the maximum aperture range, you cannot stop it down any further than f/16. My 35 f/2 goes from f/2 to f/22.

When you guys travel with your camera and lenses in a backpack, do you keep a lens attached to the camera body Or do you take the lens off and put the caps on?

The 50mm is always a solid choice given the price and focal range. I don't use mine often but I don't regret having it as a just-in-case (I prefer my 24-70 f/2.8). I don't think there's too much of a difference between the G and the D; since the D610 has the autofocus motor it will only marginally matter if you get the G over the D version.

As for your second question that's correct. For example my 24-70 f/2.8 goes from 2.8 to 22, but my 70-200 f/4 goes from 4 to 32. While the camera can allow for smaller apertures, you're limited by the aperture range of the lens.
