Is this a good lens? I was considering buying it, but I'd like others' opinions of it before buying.

I wouldn't bother. The Nikon 55-200 VR is a great lens available at such a good price, it doesn't make sense to cheap out for the off-brands.

YES.

VR is no gimmick, it really helps for still subjects in low light, especially at the long end. I wouldn't bother with the non-VR version, it's actually a completely different lens. Nikon made many other improvements with the VR version.
 
The Tamron is called a macro lens but it is really no that is just a gimmick with the closest focus is 37.4" where as the Nikon is 3.6' which equals 43.2" so not really a big deal neither is a macro lens. and the 6" isn't really worth the $20 and the lesser quality of the Nikon.
