A question (I've never been there): is it allowed to go closer to the statues?

Unfortunately no. You cannot get close to the statutes. These are invaluable historical artefacts and well protected. A long lens is required to get detailed shots.

It's not the distance that bothers me. It's the fact I couldn't shoot from statues' eye level.

Benjo...there are some viewing areas where you can get a good look eye-to-eye. A longer lens is a good idea though.

Yes, long focal is a must here. The first photo you post JJ is something closer to what I would love to shot if I could be there. Awesome historical artefacts anyway. They give me shivers. I think I could easily fill a 16GB with tons of JPG if I had the freedom of walking around and between them a shot from wherever I want. Uhm...better not. Probably I would accidentally hit one of them while shooting a photo to another one...and Make them fall with a domino effect.
