Backups, Backups, Backups. I learned my lesson 2 years ago when I lost 43GB of music off my computer. You have no idea how long that much music takes to replace over a dial-up connection
Anyways, I do hard drive recoveries for people all the time and my favorite tool for that is Ubuntu.
Often times I am able to put in the Ubuntu disc, boot the computer from it, which will bring up an entire Operating System, and then copy the files from the dead/dieing drive to an external hard drive.
I have recovered tons of data in this fashion.
However, the best thing to do is back up your pictures. I personally back mine up to an archival DVD, ensure that I use an acid free CD/DVD pen, then dump them in a Safety deposit box.
